I love music, teaching children and being a wife and a mom. So, when I recently retired after 30 years of teaching, I found myself in the wonderful world of book publishing, alongside my husband – a place where I could combine many of the things I love.
I remember fondly our two children, now in their twenties, huddled together around a cassette player sharing read-along books of many kinds. They were enchanted by the voices dramatizing the stories, the sound effects, the music, and the independence of turning the pages at the appropriate time. We travelled often to visit family, and the read-along books and cassettes became a treasured part of the car trips. They even had their own headphones and hand-held cassette players at one point! I am so pleased to be involved in the production of Runley Read-Along books – CDs have replaced the cassettes – but the quality of the story-telling remains the same. The formula remains simple: stories + pictures + music + voices + sounds … entertaining, educating … and improving literacy skills … fantastic! Family, friendship and new experiences are themes important in literature for children.
Check out the Runley Read-Along books that present these themes; in particular Finding Leif’s Heart, Zahara’s Move, and A Pig in a Tub.
